Auroville – The City of Concinnity and Tranquility!

Auroville is a planned township situated in Viluppuram district around 150 kms south of Chennai and has certain parts in Pondicherry in India. The universal township aimed at fostering peace and progressive harmony was initially conceptualised by Sri Aurobindo, an indian guru, poet, philosopher and nationalist. However, the concept was brought into existence by his collaborator, Mirra Alfassa, (known as ‘The Mother’) as early as 1930s. She was a French spiritual guru, an occultist and worshipped as a female incarnation of the divine. The notion was later worked upon, advanced and showcased to the Government of India, who played an eminent role as an espousal and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 1966, UNESCO extolled the significance of the undertaking and accorded to pass a concerted resolution, stating it as a project of value and importance to the future of humanity whilst being a source of encouragement. Architect Roger Anger designed this spectacular masterpiece in the year 1968. It is acknowledged as the sole internationally endorsed progressive experiment that proclaimed and promulgated worldwide harmony and peace among individuals along with transformation of consciousness as well as conduct a pragmatic indagation on the concept of sustainable living and subsequent social, religious, cultural and environmental needs of humankind. An inauguration ceremony was held on 28th February 1968 to commemorate the successful implementation and inception of the future universal township. Around 5000 people including representatives of 124 nations, convened near a tree at the centre of the township and had to mix the soil that they brought from their homeland in a white marble- clad, lotus shaped urn of human unity, that is situated at the focal point of the amphitheatre. The 4-point charter was simultaneously given by ‘The Mother’ that delineated her vision for Auroville.

Auroville is cleped after the name of Sri Aurobindo and is well renowned for propagating the theory of Integral yoga with the world at large, construction of a magnificent 29-meter towering gold dome, organisation and establishment of a functional town in the desert area, acquiring the prodigious quintessential glass globe in the world as well as emphasising the need to incorporate healthy products such as spirulina seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, sprouted sunflower seeds along with several other healthy options and blazoning their enormous benefits essential for the overall well being of an individual.

As per the inceptive idea, about 50,000 residents were likely to inhabit in the universal township. However, only around 400 persons from over 20 nations co-existed in this township and the subsequent years that followed; observed a drastic proliferation in the rise of the number of individuals that amounted to about 2000 individuals from over 40 nations. The recent research and compilation of work, states that, there are about 3000 residents from 59 nations across the world from various social classes, backgrounds and cultures and constituted an estimated figure of about two thirds from India, Germany and France. The community sundered into distinct neighbourhoods in the form of English, Tamil, French and Sanskrit names like Aarti, Aspiration, Auromodel, La ferme and issai ambalam etc.

Why is Auroville known as the “City of Dawn”?
Auroville is known as the “City of Dawn” owing to its roots in the French language, “Aurore” which denotes ‘dawn’ and ‘Vile” indicates city. As its bedrock is the manifestation of humanity around the world; any person is liable to become a resident of this amicable city. Although, it is imperative for prospective residents to have a trial period of a minimum of 1 year and be disposed to let go of attachments to physical assets, faith and politics. It is also envisaged as an area; where people are valued in terms of their capabilities and their utility is merely not measured in monetary terms or their physical possessions. The main objective is to bring awareness with respect to social consciousness; wherein each and every individual actively partakes to contribute as per his or her capacity to the community at large. Every Aurovillian is bound to serve as a volunteer for five hours on a quotidian basis and monetary transactions are strictly restricted between them. The ultimate ideology is to exhibit one’s work in a way that boosts the welfare of the community in general as well as augments the person’s capabilities.

The map of the city is centralised about the Peace Area that incorporates the city’s most prominent and notable paragon: the Matrimandir, which is a colossus golden domed temple that upholds the value of silence as a whole. There are four zones of the township, divaricating from the centre namely; the industrial, international, residential and cultural zones. These zones are truly phenomenal as they provide spaces for exhibiting human unity, aesthetic expression, carry out pertinent research activities and do not limit themselves to just dispense areas for mere existence of individuals. Furthermore, the city zones are encircled by a broad, green belt that accommodates numerous numbers of organic farms, botanical garden, forests, a seed bank as well as water catchment areas.

Apart from this, the ‘Visitors centre’ and ‘Auroville beach’ are also noteworthy places that you can’t just afford to miss; if you plan to make it here any time soon. The visitors centre is the focal point for visitors and guests to learn and understand the history, ideals and principles, spiritual works by renowned propagators of the township and present-day manifestation of the same. It harbours in a complex of buildings comprising of exhibitions, astounding boutiques for Auroville handicrafts and goods, information and guest reception, great cafes, a nice bookshop and a food court. You can be sure to treat your taste buds with delicious food as the place is famous for a variety of lip-smacking dishes and is equipped with a lot of eatery options.
Other than this, Auroville boasts about the remarkable places that one ought to not avoid or give it a miss in particular such as Savitri Bhawan, Verité learning centre (For serenity and meditation), cultural pavilion and a quiet healing centre etc. among many others.

Post the coronavirus outbreak and as per the latest reports, the township has reopened its ‘Visitors centre’ and ‘Matrimandir’
viewing point for access to the public; whilst following all the government restrictions and safety protocols. Although, the Matrimandir’s inner meditation chamber is still expected to be closed until further instructions. So, people who are interested to visit the centre and Matrimandir point have to make the booking online in advance, on the main portal of the website i.e https://visit.auroville.org . However, there will be a restricted number of entries per hour to eschew the mess of overcrowding.

In a nutshell, visitors centre is open and welcome to all the people who would like to visit the township at present. All the units of the centre namely, astounding boutiques, exhibitions, bookshop, lovely cafes and several other outlets would remain functional and cater the best of its services to people at large.

Tips for NRI Planning Their Next Holiday in India

NRIs visiting India with their kith and kin often make last-minute travel plans. With an extended bucket list—people to meet, to-do list, travel places to unravel, etc. Obviously, for  NRI tours holiday planning isn’t going to be easy without proper planning. But put things into perspective, you can enjoy your holidays, and spend quality time with your family and friends while in India.

Here are some ways by which NRIs can make the most of their holiday experience:

Choosing your travel destination:
India is an exotic land that has fascinated the western world for several centuries. There are a number of holiday destinations to suit every mood, budget and season. Therefore, options are aplenty and, if you’re an NRI, all you need to do is to choose the right holiday destination by factoring in various aspects such as the duration, what part of the year or season you’re travelling, and who your travel partner is: spouse, friend, colleague, etc. These factors and more will largely decide the theme and purpose of your travel. The more you read popular travel sites and blog or use resourceful travel apps, the more you’ll be able to extract useful information, advice and hacks from other travelers and travel buffs.

If all you want to visit is a quiet and serene travel destination, then the mountains are your calling. States like Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Kerala offer a number of scenic landscapes that would not only rejuvenate you, but leave an indelible impression upon your mind for eternity. If your adrenaline is kicking hard and fast, then you should visit one of the national parks in the country such as the Bandipur National Park, Kaziranga National Park, etc.

If it’s a family holiday tour, places of religious and spirituals interests will excite elderly family members. If you are enamored by the architectural marvels of our country, why not explore the culturally and historically significant heritage sites of the bygone era across the country?

Advance planning:
It is always recommended that NRIs plan in advance, taking into account the time availability of their family and friends. Most travel and tour operators, either online or offline, provide early-bird offers and deals for NRI tours in India, the benefits of which NRIs can reap only when they plan in advance. This also means greater savings and peace of mind!

Using Credit & Debit card offers:
From earning frequent flyer miles, discounts and deals on travel and stay, and various EMI offers—as an NRI, you can opt for numerous discounts and offers. Most financial institutions and banks are tied up with several travel partners that allow you to book flights, cabs, vehicles, self-drive and lots more. Check their websites and avail of the offers posted there from time to time.

Watch your baggage weight
Baggage allowance is another factor that can dictate overseas air travel, probably somewhat low when it comes to a domestic flight. However, it is recommended to carefully check the baggage specifications like size dimensions with the tour agent/operator or airlines.

Travel Insurance policy
If you’re an NRI and international visitor, travel insurance becomes mandatory. It can provide you with increased peace of mind and an added layer of security in the case of accidents, unexpected medical emergencies or cancellations, and theft or loss of your luggage, etc. Don’t brush this step aside when planning your next visit to India. Talk to your travel operator/agency managing tour services for NRI or insurance agency, and sign up for a policy that best meets your requirements.

Speak the language of money—be organized:
Stay abreast of the latest developments with the customs regulations when carrying and handling foreign currency. Questions including what’s the upper limit of foreign currency exchange and those related to declaring cash in excess of USD 10,000 (or its equivalent) in currency notes, traveler’s cheques and currency notes matter a lot. All said and done it should be noted that exchange of foreign currency cash for INR (Indian Rupees) can prove expensive. It is advisable to use your debit card for cash withdrawal in Indian currency from the local ATM centers. Therefore, you can also remit or deposit money to India before your arrival so that you will have sufficient cash in your NRE or NRO savings account. Here understanding the differences between NRE and NRO type accounts helps before opening a bank account.

Make multiple hard copies of travel documents
Always carry multiple copies of essential documents including flight tickets, passport, credit/debit cards, bank documents and various ID proofs. In India, with limited internet access at times, it is always handy to have these documents in hand.

Protect your family’s health:
It is important to understand the protocols of the COVID pandemic (at the time of writing this article) before travelling to a particular region. Taking any special medical precautions, including vaccination and immunization records, especially for the kids and elderly members on an overseas trip is important. Exercise precaution with a complete travel health kit, safe consumption and food safety  wherever you travel in India.

6 Essentials I Bring With Me On All My Travels

Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, the same goes for the essentials you take with you. They might not be new, but if they’ve served you well on previous trips, keep them close. It can be difficult to assess the quality of a traveler’s packing list, as there’s no way to test whether or not they have enough toiletries, or if they have space for the extra pair of shoes they’ve been eyeing. But there are a few essential items that can’t be left at home, no matter how far you travel.

I’ve been on a lot of trips over the past few years and each experience has left me with a handful of essentials that I can’t live without. Whether I am traveling for the first time or the millionth time, these items make my trips easier and more enjoyable.

1.Passport
When I travel I like to experience new cultures, new locations and new food. But the best part of traveling is the people you meet and the memories you make along the way. Your passport holds a wealth of information on your life and is one of the most important and cherished belongings you carry with you. When it is time to renew your passport we want to make sure we’re there to assist you.

My passport is the first and most important document I bring with me on all my travels. I can’t imagine traveling without it. It’s my identity, and the only way to get into most countries.

2.Phone charger / portable phone charger
A portable phone charger is one of the most important things to have when traveling. After all, you can’t expect to be able to take your phone with you on most of your trips. While some people just use the phone during the day, I prefer to charge it at night, before I go to sleep. That is why I would highly recommend you to invest in a portable phone charger.

When it comes to traveling, you always have to find a way to power your phone. The problem with most portable chargers is that they are heavy, don’t work well, or both. While there are some silver bullet chargers out there, they are very expensive and hard to find. That’s why I prefer to bring along a lightweight portable charger when I travel. These portable chargers are light, easy to use, and powerful. By using these chargers, I can skip the crazy airport lines, stay connected when I’m on the road, and avoid overcharging my phone.

3.Euros
Most of us have a small bag that we carry around for a trip or a day at the beach. Sometimes, when we pack it, we forget to add a few essential things. The bag, in any case, ends up empty, and we have to remember to add these missing items to it in order to be prepared for our travels.

Look, I love traveling. I love seeing new places and meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and trying new foods and all that good stuff. But I’ve realized that the number one thing I always take with me that’s valuable to me is my Euros. Every time I’ve needed cash for a bus ticket or a drink or something, I’ve found myself without any cash and no easy way to get some.

4.EU adapters
If you’re a frequent traveler, you know how important it is to have the right adapters for your devices. Without them, you’ll have a hard time connecting to the power and network in a new country.

I’d been meaning to write about this for a while. I’m a sucker for portable chargers, and have been since before I was a teenager. In my experience, it’s far too easy to get caught up in the idea that a portable charger should be able to do everything. The reality is that a portable charger is an approximation, not a replacement.

5.Sun cream
It’s very important to protect yourself from the Sun as it can do a lot of harm to your skin. The first thing you should do is apply sun cream. This should be applied to the areas of the skin it’s applied to, and it should be reapplied at least every other day. When choosing a sun cream, remember to first apply a moisturizer to the skin, before applying the sun cream. The sun cream should then be applied to the areas that require it, and should not be applied to other areas of the skin.

I like to travel, and I like to spend as much time as possible outdoors. You can see this is a common theme I have. The problem is that the warmer the day, the more my skin breaks out and becomes irritated. I spend a lot of time outdoors and my skin suffers. So, I’ve come up with a short list of products I always have with me to protect my skin from the sun.

6.Water bottle
I can’t live without a water bottle while traveling. It’s a great way to stay hydrated while away from a reliable water source. But it’s more than just a drink bottle. I keep a water bottle with me on all my travels, and I use it for more than just drinking water. Here are six ways I use my water bottle on all my trips.

Our precious bodies are made up of more than stomachs, hearts, lungs, and brains—we are made up of water, too. We can’t survive without it, but too much or too little can kill us. So, it’s important to be aware of the water you drink, the water you use to bathe yourself, and the water you drink when you’re in the shower.
