Spasiba Russia: Exploring the Rich Culture and Hospitality of the Land by Apoorva Bhardwaj

My Mother has been a single mom for most of my life, she is the pillar of strength and my closest friend in the world. For the longest time life was all about dealing with reality, it was only a few years back when I got back from university that I pushed her to travel with me, and there’s been no looking back since. She’s been bitten by the travel bug. We started with predictable trips in the first few years, and then in 2017 I mentioned to her about how I was planning to visit Russia- imagine my surprise when she joined in! Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect from our trip. For our first international trip together this was a massive leap. Now considering the political climate as I write reminiscing about our trip, I’m glad we made it.

Politics and people have a tendency to ruin places and the magic the hold of each city can have over you. I have always been intrigued by the tsarian history of Russia, and its end at the hands of the communist revolution. When you set foot in Moscow, the city mesmerises you- starting from the crazy confusion of colors masking hidden layers of the stunning cathedral of Vasily the blessed, built by Ivan the terrible! the beauty of this paradox is not lost on me. The gorgeous Cathedral of the Annunciation– dream keeper of the Muscovite Tsars and the Red Square are Highlights. Its suddenly an avalanche of stories and events in history you cannot avoid anymore. The Red square has more character than most places I have seen so far, while The St. Basil Basilica with its Onion Architecture is unique, and magnificent.

You Can familiarize yourself with any place if you walk through its streets and explore its turns and crevices. The Moscow Kremlin stands tall and proud, overlooking Stalin’s tomb. The square itself is busy, chaotic, dynamic- the movement is dizzying but the historical envisages steadying. We walked through so much of the city, through parks and imperial gardens, through gold Mosques and busy theatres. Heck we even watched a Russian Play at the Bolshevik theater! We toured through the spectacular Russian metro called the ‘Palace of the people’ due to its unique and spectacular interiors, a reminder of a state Russia once was. Dumskaya street is fabulous to spend a night in revelry and try some of that legendary Russian vodka, with artists and singers lining this beautifully lit street of bars and restaurants until the wee hours of morning. The city is beautiful, I don’t have one salty memory of my stay here- just the weight of the stories of blood and sacrifice.

St. Petersberg! It is probably one of my favorite cities in the world- so endearing, brings a smile to my face even today. This relatively smaller city was one I was looking forward to eagerly, having been a fan of “Anastasia” growing up. The unique city is the true heart of Russia with so much to offer in terms of a more intimate version of it’s stories. We spent our days exploring and diving deeper into the magical era of the Tzars, unveiling each piece of their historical fate with visits to the Winter palace, St. Isaac’s cathedral, Church of the Savior on the spilled blood, and the Peter and Paul fortress shedding more light on the communist rebellion- with a visit to Trubetskoy Bastian prison. The Kazan Cathedral was particularly satisfying- emanating peace and meditative bliss.

Russia turned out to be one of the biggest surprises, I remember it so fondly it is an incredible, almost unsettling feeling considering how I feel about the country in terms of my political and humanitarian alignments. I guess that is why travelling and visiting a country is important- it may be Imperial Russia, Communist Russia or controversial and war hungry Russia through the ages, but for me its simply my sweet, incredibly endearing Russia.

The palace of the people.

Dubai Musings by Saro Abraham

We landed at the Dubai Airport last winter. We were visiting Dubai after a gap of ten years to spend some time with my daughter and family. On the way to their house, I could see new buildings, roads, bridges etc. Dubai is as brand new as the flashy new cars on it’s beautiful roads and flyovers. The buildings, towers, malls all look swanky and posh. For those coming to Dubai for the first time its like an El Dorado, a place of wonderment. And with a huge population of Indian expatriates working in UAE, many of their relatives and friends visit UAE as tourists.  What a great change within these ten years!  From an earlier flat, my daughter is now living in a villa. The area is full of trees. There is a lot of greenery, trees at the front and back of their house. The cold bit into our bones. And the cloud seeding brought in heavy showers. I felt as though I was in Kerala and their house and surroundings made me feel all the more so. Making the desert bloom, that’s what the rulers have done – a real miracle.

On visits to malls I could see people buying and buying and buying. I thought, how many of these things are actually going to be used and how many disposed, after lying unused in the cupboards.  I thought about Panchamma, our neighbor in Madurai who had some goats and cows; she would go to the shop with little money and think a lot on what to buy for the day or for the next few days – a little of this and that for a few hundred rupees. How some people splurge and waste, I thought.

On New Year’s eve we went to a nearby beach and pitched tents and watched the fireworks. There was a huge crowd there, all in holiday mood, police vehicles moved up and down to watch out for any misbehavior. As New Year dawned, fireworks display began, loud clapping and joyous laughter and cheers rent the air. At that time nobody thought that the year that would follow would still have the aftermath of covid and the world being adversely impacted by the Ukraine-Russia War. China still continued to be in the throes of covid.

Church visits with the family were a double joy as I could see the church along with a Sikh Gurudwara, temple, mosques etc. And there was so much religious harmony. Christmas was celebrated with the same gusto,  joy, cheer and abandon with lights and decorations everywhere like in India or even in the West. For a moment I really wondered whether I was in Dubai or back in India.  All festivals are celebrated with equal zeal in Dubai, which speaks for the liberal, open minded and secular outlook of the rulers of Dubai in  sync with a globalizing world. It is a pity that in recent years India, which had such religious harmony in the past is regressing with divides and animosities created between communities.

A few times when we were on the road in Dubai, my son-in-law pointed out to a vehicle moving ahead of us and told us that was the ruler of Dubai. We were really astounded as unlike in India or in  other countries, there were no retinue of cars and escort vehicles in front and back, nor police cars sirens wailing or other trappings of power. In India forget the prime minister and the president with their huge entourage of vehicles and police cars, even ministers down the line and chief ministers travel with all pomp and intense security, black cat commandos in cars front and back creating quite avoidable spectacles. What a contrast with the very people friendly Dubai rulers, consciously eschewing the pompousness of power. I also read in the newspaper that in one of the malls, one of the members of the ruling family, having a discussion with other officials. All of them seemed very casual and down to earth.

Very soon time to go back to India came and packing started with last minute shopping and a few visits to relatives and friends staying nearby. Reached the airport with the family. After the initial procedures we were to move on to wait for the aircraft, and so my daughter and family stayed back, after last minute hugs and goodbyes, we moved forward.

A last look at my daughter and my heart seemed to leap out and give her a silent hug. I could see her wipe her tears and I did the same and so it was au revoir to my daughter and family and to Dubai.

Why Vietnam Is Becoming Popular Among Indian Tourists by Shreya Kejriwal

There was a time when Indians would flock to Thailand in huge numbers and taking a flight to Bangkok was the new aspiration for the Indian traveller. A stellar combination of reasonable travel and proximity to India was a win-win for a quick getaway. While Thailand continues to remain popular with Indians, its vibrant neighbour – Vietnam – is giving it stiff competition when it comes to luring tourists from India.

Vietnam has emerged as one of the top travel destinations for Indian tourists in recent times. In 2022, as the tourism industry recovered from COVID-related travel restrictions, India ranked 9th out of 10 countries with the highest number of visitors to Vietnam. This number is expected to triple in 2023.

[1]. So, what pulls us Indians towards Vietnam as a holiday destination?

Economics 101
In the pre-COVID world, China was the biggest contributing source to Vietnam’s tourism. [2] With its major market still grappling with restrictions and disease mitigation, it’s no surprise that Vietnam was looking to expand its tourist clientele. Favourable relations between our countries led to measures that eased travel for Indians to Vietnam. Major cities in India now offer direct flights to the two major cities in Vietnam – Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh. On the other hand, visa for USA and Europe became hard to reach for Indians, leaving them to scout for other destinations. Perhaps we are silent pawns of a game of demand and supply?

Ease of Travel
Who doesn’t love to land in a foreign destination on a direct flight of about only 5 hours? The ease of travel extends beyond flights to visa procurement. Indians can avail of an e-Visa to Vietnam in as less as a week’s time. This potent mixture of short, direct flights and convenient visa is a bait tasty enough for the hungry, deprived, post COVID Indian traveller.

Affordability
That’s another thing we Indians love. A trip to Vietnam doesn’t burn a hole in our pockets. One can even afford to stay in luxury hotels and resorts without having to dip deep into their wallets. The cost of food and local transportation is quite similar to what we pay back home, if not lesser. Oh, and the cherry on top, affordable shopping. From the malls to the street markets, Vietnam offers a variety of lucrative things to pick up – clothes, jewellery, handicraft and the world-famous Vietnamese Coffee.

Ha Long Bay

Food
Speaking of food, Indians can never go hungry in Vietnam. Yes, even the strict vegetarians will be happy with the vast range of vegan and Indian restaurants the country has to offer. Vietnam graciously acknowledges the food preferences of Indians. Don’t be surprised to find hot puris in their hotel buffets. Vegetarians can also savour the local Vietnamese cuisine. The quintessential Vietnamese version of the French baguette, or the Banh Mi, is a must try. My favourite local dish was the vegetarian Tom Yum Hot Pot I tried in Đồng Hới.

Vietnam is paradise for all coffee lovers. The 100% Robusta coffee mixed with condensed milk – hot or over ice – will keep you energised for hours at a stretch.

History & Culture
Vietnam has a rich history and the war stories will keep any traveller hooked to dig deeper. Vietnam fought hard against the French and Americans for its independence. This country is a delight for all history lovers and its museums boast of their heritage and culture. The basket boat rides, the traditional Vietnamese hat in the form of a cone are some of their quintessential cultural elements.

Vietnam is safe, and friendly to tourists and welcome them with open arms. I was personally blown away by their hospitality when at a hotel I requested for some glue to mend the broken strap of my shoe, and they sent an engineer to my room to get it back in shape. Vietnam is great to travel with kids, making it a popular among Indians as a destination to travel with family.

The Temple of Literature, Ha Noi

Attractions
Regardless of where the tourist comes from, Vietnam has hordes of attractions to engage them. From beautiful temples in Ha Noi to cruising along the Ha Long Bay; from the newly discovered caves in Phong Nha to the Cu Chi tunnels near Saigon, you can never run out of things to do in Vietnam.

So, if you’ve had enough of checking others’ travel stories on Instagram, it may be time to rid the FOMO and see what the fuss about Vietnam is all about. What I can promise, you won’t regret sailing along the beautiful coastline and hiking in the lush green forests.

Top 8 Countries to Spend Your Christmas Vacations

Christmas is one of the busiest travel seasons, whether for visiting relatives, looking for snow, or just taking a holiday abroad. Christmas travel might lose appeal due to increased expenses and crowd sizes, but with enough planning, you can have an outstanding end-of-year experience. Here are 8 of the Christmas holiday destinations throughout the world, from the beaches of Bali to the streets of London.

Best Christmas Holiday Destinations in the World

#1. Indonesia’s Bali

For this reason, Bali is one of the most well-liked island destinations for Australian and New Zealand tourists. Its vast coastline is dotted with amazing beaches, its warm waters are home to waves of the highest calibre, and its sunsets are unquestionably among the best in the world. This Christmas holiday destination can be overrun with visitors, especially around Christmas. Be prepared to share the beach with adventurous surfers, wandering yogis, and families worldwide. Consider checking into neighbouring islands like Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands if you seek a more laid-back atmosphere.

#2. Sri Lanka’s southwest coast

Sri Lanka is a slightly less visited alternative to Bali’s busy beaches. Numerous beautiful beaches may be found throughout the small island nation, particularly in the southwest. Cities like Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, Tangalle, and Bentota are becoming more and more well-liked vacation destinations for beach enthusiasts who quest the tropical sun, snorkelling, and surfing. Reserve your beach vacations for the south and west coasts of Sri Lanka when the monsoon season is at its worst in December.

#3. Fiji

The picture-perfect scenery of Fiji has long been a favourite among children, couples on honeymoons, and beachgoers of all stripes. It is one of the best Christmas holiday destinations for families. Beautiful island groups and family-friendly resorts make the nation a favourite destination to unwind over Christmas. Some of the best lodging and natural beauty may be found in areas like the Mamanuca Islands, Coral Coast, and Denarau Island. During Christmas, resort rooms can be in high demand, so reserve early to prevent disappointment.

#4. Japan’s Hokkaido

Christmas in Japan is unique, as evidenced by the many people celebrating the holiday with a bucket of KFC fried chicken. But the north of Japan is just as magical as any other place as far as places to spend Christmas in the winter. In December, the start of the Japanese snow season, you have the best chance of seeing snow on the northern island of Hokkaido. The Sapporo German Christmas Market, which features glitzy decorations, authentic German food, and music, is a must-see in Hokkaido.

#5. Austria’s Vienna

Christmas in Vienna is like something out of a fairy tale. Imagine lovely town squares lit with magical lights as carol singers and puppeteers entertain the masses. Some of Europe’s most well-known Christmas markets are those in Vienna, where visitors may enjoy seasonal goodies like hot punch, roasted chestnuts, and candied almonds—furthermore, using Alfa Travel discount codes, you can save money on your travel trip.

The Vienna Christmas Markets are dispersed across the city rather than being a single, focal event. Some focus on arts and crafts, others are well-known for their music and entertainment, and others are foodies’ favourites. If you’re staying in Vienna for a few days, you might find that visiting some of the smaller Christmas markets will help you avoid the crowds.

#6. Finland’s Lapland

There is no better Christmas holiday destination than Santa Claus’ abode. The Finnish region of Lapland is one of the most well-liked locations in Europe to enjoy the holiday season since it truly is a winter paradise. Travellers from all over the world travel to visit Santa Claus Village, wild reindeer, ice sculptures, and pure snow.

#7. New York City, USA

Frank Sinatra’s sensual music, snow-covered walkways, and outdoor ice skating: the City That Never Sleeps knows how to bring holiday cheer. Christmas in the United States is primarily celebrated in New York City, which has been featured in iconic holiday films like Home Alone, Scrooged, Elf, and others. Family-friendly favourites with a festive vibe include the Bryant Park Winter Village, Rockefeller Tree, and the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. New York City traffic may be challenging even without snow and ice since it is so congested at other times of the year. Whenever possible, choose the subway system over cabs.
