Magical Music Treat in Ambukuthi Hills, Wayanad

After a tiring trek to Arnamala hills and waterfalls, every inch of my body was aching. It was begging for me to take some rest. (Of course the view was fantabulous and the waterfall was divine) On hearing that further one trek should be done to reach Ambukuthi hills, where our troop’s tents will be pitched for the night’s stay, I lost my head. Know more about waterfalls in India.

The simple trail looked complicated to me. For each step I took, I got a lot dizzier. Finally, around 11.30 pm – 12 am, we reached the hills. My eyes were zoned off; it was dark that I wasn’t able to see anything clearly including people who were around me. I felt chill air cuddling me with its arms. I held my jacket closer, to keep me warm. I could hear people’s excitement, laughter. More or less I would say I was physically present and mentally worn out. All I was waiting for was someone to come and pitch my tents, so that I can go and lie down. My prayers were heard, within some time, tents were ready to be occupied. Most probably, I would’ve been the only person to rush into it amid others who were chitchatting, staying outside sitting on the rocks. I remember pulling off the sleeping bags till my neck and closing my eyes. I went to deep sleep.

I heard something. Is that a song? I didn’t wake up, but my mind was distracted by some music. I know I’m getting disturbed from sleep. But I couldn’t open my eyes. The voice was shrill. It was so sweet that one would want to hear this for a lifetime. The notes and pitches were perfect, without any cracks. I wasn’t able to restrain myself more, that I got up. Time was 3 am. Not bad, I have slept for two and half hours. Now, who is singing? I was curious to know.

I unzipped my tent and came out. Some of my trek mates didn’t sleep, they were just lying on the rocks, talking. At some distance, I saw a figure with a guitar in his hand, singing ‘Channa Mereya’. Along with him, there were two more of them. I could see something shining. Is that a beer bottle? Um, maybe. I sat there, facing them. That singing guy’s hands were playing with his guitar and his voice was like honey in the stream. I was completely immersed. It was so dark that I couldn’t see his face, he had long hair but. I don’t know how long I stayed, but I would say, I didn’t regret sitting there, freezing. Listening to his songs, from Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil was like attending a concert, for free. That perfect, that classic. I wanted to ask him to sing ‘Cherathukal’ song for me. But I didn’t move a bit from my place.

I looked up into the sky, it was clear. I could see the stars twinkling. I looked around. It was so peaceful. Calm night, pitched tents, shining stars and a guy with a guitar singing. Doesn’t it feel dreamy? Oh yes! To me, this looked like a fairy tale. Like, it was both magical and musical. It was a treat.

I decided to sleep, because we will have to go to Iruppu waterfalls later that day and it requires some moderate level of walking. But I know one thing for sure; I’m going to find who that person is, in the morning, once I wake up and right away go and talk to him. Just a compliment; ‘You sang well, your voice is too good. Soon you will reach heights’. Because, I know how valuable a single appreciation is.

People who know me, know how much I love music. Not an expert though, but a learner and an admirer of this art. I’m forever grateful for how music has changed my blues on some cold nights, how it has tamed me during my tough days, how it has supported me by being a constant companion, till now. It’s not the guy I’m looking for, but instead, his voice.

I woke up. I regretted missing the sunrise. The sky was bright, but it was still cold. My eyes searched for that guy. He wasn’t there. I could see the empty bottles lying around. I asked, each and everyone around me, ‘Did you see that singing guy?’ Some didn’t and a few said yes.

‘Where is he now?’
‘He has already left the campsite.’
‘What? No. Okay, do you know his name?’ ‘Sorry, didn’t know that.’
I got the same answer from those few, who saw him.

I was devastated. I couldn’t take it. Like, I was so close and even then, I missed. I could’ve talked to him that night itself. But something stopped me from doing it. Maybe that late night time, those bottles or maybe I was completely mesmerized by his songs, that my feet refused to stand up and my mouth refused to utter a word. I don’t know.

And, it was time for us to descend the peak. With a heavy heart I gathered all my stuff and was ready to leave. I wished he would never stop singing in his entire life. Someday he might become a playback singer. And someday I’ll be able to compliment him. For, voices like that, shouldn’t be wasted. It should be celebrated.

“Nalumanikattu” an Epitome of Sustainable Tourism in Thiruvanchoor – Kottayam, Kerala

The aim of sustainable tourism is to make a balance between guarding the milieu, upholding cultural veracity, instituting social justice and indorsing economic benefits, meeting the needs of the host population in terms of better-quality living standards both in the short and long term.

The travel and tourism industry is positioned among the leading industries in the world. However, the demeaning effects of tourism have become a big apprehension and need to be addressed quickly. With this in mind, the concept of sustainable tourism has materialized with the aim of dropping the undesirable effects of tourism activities, which has become almost universally accepted as a desirable and politically applicable methodology to tourism expansion.

Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present-day tourists and host regions while shielding and augmenting openings for the future. It is predicted as leading to management of all means in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while preserving cultural veracity, essential ecological progressions, biological diversity and life backing systems.
Here is where “nalumanikkattu” the India’s first road side village tourism project becomes extraordinary. Nalumanikattu is a road side sightseer fascination and frivolous park in Kottayam district of Kerala. It is a good illustration of how a place can be used meritoriously in an eco-friendly means.

Sustainable tourism meets the demands of the present without negotiating the capacity of future generations to meet their own needs. In Kottayam district there is a place called Manarcad and there is a small tourist area called “Nalumanikattu” the specialty of the place is the local people sell home cooked snacks and farm products. No plastic is used as part of eco-friendly practices; environment is set to appreciate nature. Here we witness the grass root level efforts by which sustainable tourism is flourishing. Sustainable tourism is that which encompasses travelling to undisturbed natural areas with the specified objective of studying, admiring, and enjoying the natural world.

The story goes like this years back this place was used by uncivilized passersby to dump the waste and living in this place became not very practical for the people. They were seriously discerning of preventing this and making use of the place. Then the resident association came up with the idea of clearing the place and they took the help of a group of women called ‘kudumbashree’, who takes responsibility of such activities. Once they cleared up the place, using the technical help of Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences converted the place into a lovely park, and dream came into a reality. And gave the fascinating name ‘Nalumanikkattu”.

Most of the food-counters are run by Kudumbashree members. Here no outsiders are permitted to sell their products.

Most of these activities and food counters operate during prime leisure hours’ evenings, or between 4 PM and 7 PM on weekdays. The reason is obvious that this is the time people are free after their daily assignments.

During main vacations and other celebrations, cultural programs are also show cased at “Naalumanikkaattu”.

There is a kids corner in this place where you see lot of innovative play things and it is good place for the children to come out of their congested home and enjoy the environment. Parks are a great place for toddlers to discover nature and workout their imagination, connecting with family. While kids may feel associated with nature at a park, it also conveys quality family time. The children those who are exposed to such activities will improve the quality of life and will become more gregarious in their attitude and behaviour. Since nalumanikkattu is comparatively a quiet place there are lot of things to learn.

The games and activities for kids are– like swings, a snake boat model, a big slide, outdoor metal climbing toy etc. and above all long space to run around and enjoy with friends. There is also a small Butterfly section at one end of the area. Where you can see various types of its kind and this is a major attraction for children as well as for foreigners visiting this place.

Another important thing about this place is there is a market which sells Kerala’s well-known agricultural products. Mainly jackfruit, tapioca, different varieties of mango. During rainy season you will find numerous kinds of river fish selling on the way side, and good number of the people of Kerala are fish lovers. This is another reason that attract people to this destination. All food items that are sold here are organically grown and occasionally though the price is little higher comparatively there are customers to buy the products. As we know today everyone is becoming more well-being sensible and are aware of the chemicals that go into the food from the time of cultivation to the harvest. Either people are trying to grow vegetables and fruits at home on their own or buy them from the reliable source. No doubt this is right place to materialize these ideas.

There are very authentic and eye-catching seating facilities arranged here and photographers choose this place for the post marriage alum shooting and it is also a well-known place for the selfie lovers. The seating facilities are such that people can sit together in group or as a family. There is lot of entertainment and at the same time seclusion at this place. One can feel a homely and heavenly atmosphere here. Though the place is not very refined and sophisticated and provides lot of entertainment and bliss. One can also experience the actual meaning of sustainable and eco-tourism.

Conclusion
Sustainable tourism is the concept of visiting any place as a tourist and trying to make a positive influence on the environment, society, and economy. The place Nalumanikattu is a good example of sustainable tourism. years back it was a dumbing yard and because of this living here was always a question and people were disposed to all types of ailments. It was the good will of the resident association and hats off to them for their untiring efforts which led an abandoned area to a tourism terminus. It is a developing area and a good place for the nature lovers to spend their free time. Today there is a high demand for farm-grown products. This is also a place where local people specially homemakers can sell their homemade product and earn their lively hood.

Places like this are a training ground for the fledgling cohort. Since parents are involved in conserving the environment and sustaining it, kids get to learn firsthand the importance of responsible living. Examples like this are prevalent in the countryside of Europe, where it has become part of the culture. The same model like Nalumanikattu can be developed in other, villages’ towns and city fringes. Shorn of sustaining there is no future for human race, and what better training ground than one’s own home and vicinity.

It is enticing a rather intricate developing segment that involves skill and professionalism. Tourism must offer products that are operated in harmony with the local atmosphere, public attitudes and cultures, so that these become the permanent recipients and not victims of tourism development. The term ‘sustainability’ which has gained celebrity in tourism jargon, is seen by many writers as an important part of the philosophy flooding all levels of tourism policy issues and practices from coast-to-coast to local.

Witness Impeccable Beauty Only at Kerala

India as a country is not just famous for its traditions and culture, but is also well-known for the beauty it houses in the form of different destinations. Yes, traveling to an international destination is always a great idea on account of the beautiful attractions and tourist points it withholds. But, little did we know, that our country-India, is no less when it comes to offering beauty in the form of attractions and destinations.

Many times, we opt for tour packages to witness the charm and gorgeousness the cities or states within India. But at times, due to certain circumstances, we might have to explore such places by ourselves. Hence, you got to start somewhere! While you cannot settle for ‘THE’ best place, since there are too many, I shall go with the one that has stolen everyone’s heart, and continues to do so time and again. It is none other than KERALA!

Yes! With the beautiful Arabian sea in the west, the Western Ghats towering the east, and divided by many rivers, Kerala boasts unique features that have made it one of the most sought out destinations in India, and Asia.
Kerala is well-known for many things. An equable climate, serene beaches, tranquil stretches of backwaters, lush hill stations, and greenery almost everywhere. Not to forget waterfalls and countless tea plantations that attract a number of tea lovers from all over the world. Kerala, apart from offering such beautiful aspects, is also known for its advanced society which has a 100% literacy rate! Isn’t that astonishing! Moreover, it also has the highest physical quality of life in India and is the cleanest state too. Yes, the list can go on. But let’s establish the real reason for me writing this blog, and that is to list down some of the best places to visit within Kerala.

Munnar

Let’s start with the place that is one of the most opted for destinations-Munnar. Yes, you may have heard your friends talk about this destination and its beauty, and let me tell you this, whatever, they’ve said, or you’ve heard, it’s all true. Munnar in every sense is ‘beautiful’.

It rises as three mountains streams merge, and was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government. With sprawling tea plantations at every nook and corner, winding lanes, and waterfalls, Munnar is one of the most popular places in Kerala to visit. You can witness the exotic flora and fauna along with lush green forests. Munnar also houses the highest mountain in South Asia-Anamudi, which is also an ideal place for trekking (any trekkers in the house, do visit this peak!)

Thekkady

Giving some competition to the lovely Munnar is Thekkady, that is famous for a perfect jungle vacation. Any animal lovers around? This is your next holiday spot! The very sound of the name Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, chains of hills, and spice scented plantations. What more, well the Periyar forests of Thekkady is one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in India. It is also a place where you can enjoy some bamboo rafting in the catchment area of Mullaiperiyar Dam, hiking, and more! Popular for its excellent eating joints, at Thekkady, you can also enjoy its vast stretches of spice gardens and various adventure sports.

Alappuzha
Experience another beautiful destination within Kerala, Alappuzha. This place has always captured an important position in the maritime history of Kerala. It is also referred to as the Venice of the East. Today, it is famous for its boat races, backwaters, houseboats, beaches, and the greenery that is present almost everywhere. Alappuzha beach is also considered to be a famous beach spot and houses a lighthouse that makes for the main attractions that intrigue visitors.

Athirapally

Are you a waterfall lover? Even if you aren’t, you should stop by Athirapally, which by far, houses the best waterfalls that are a sight worth witnessing. Athirapally Waterfalls are located 1000ft above sea level at the Chalakudy River in Thrissur district of Kerala. In the monsoon season, in its full might, the waterfalls appear like Niagara Falls. Athirapally falls can be visited anytime during the year. Though the waterfall appears to be the best during monsoons, heavy rains can sometimes cause significant inconvenience.

Another astonishing feature of this waterfall is that it’s famous in the Bollywood industry. If you are someone who doesn’t live under a rock, then you might have come across the movie or even watched it-Bahubali. Yes! Its eye-thundering VFX effects and the mind-blowing sceneries in the film are one of the biggest factors that contributed to its success. However, the point I’m trying to establish here is that the waterfall through which SHIVA (famously known as Prabhas) reaches to the Mahishmati, which is located above the clouds, is not at all the VFX, but in fact is an actual location, which is none other than the Athirapally Falls. So, if you are a big fan of the movie (or the lead actor), then this makes for a great reason to stop by this beautiful creation mother nature has offered.

Kovalam

Another shining jewel of Kerala, Kovalam is just located at 17kms from the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The word Kovalam when translated means ‘a grove of coconut trees’, which I feel is the perfect name on account of the beauty this beach city holds.

This city has been a hit list since the 1930s and continues to attract a number of tourists. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has created a beautiful bay of calm waters, which is suitable for sea bathing. Moreover, the leisure options in this city are diverse. From sunbathing, swimming, herbal body massages, to catamaran cruising, you can find things that will inevitably amuse and pamper you.

So, now that we’ve established why is Kerala the perfect holiday destination in India, and have listed down the most famous destinations to stop by, the only thing left to do is pack your bags and head out to God’s own country!
