Millennial Travellers are of a different breed. A large number of them are from the IT industry in India. They would rather design their own travel programmers than asking someone else to do it. They would do it even if it costs them some extra money. Millennial travelers want packages that are perfectly customized for them and match their expectations.

Millennials live to gain experiences, so they are the first ones to explore exotic destinations in exotic India and overseas destinations. In the travel industry, millennials occupy a crucial place. Many new travel programmes are made for this demographic group. The digital evolution has further sparked the interest of these travelers now that they can see and get to know about faraway lands.

Will millennials expedite the recovery of the travel industry?

The tourism industry is slowly picking up on the back of the millennial crowd of India. A considerable number of travellers in this segment are from the millennial demographic. In India, a vast number of travellers are millennials who can manage things on their own and build their itineraries. They do not believe in restricting themselves to the limited options that travel and tour companies provide.

Why millennials are an important demographic for the travel segment?

  • Millennials are unconventional – Travel companies in the Indian travel industry have lots of choices to provide experiences for these people. They are open to travel to any country and open to any type of cultural experience. This gives travel companies multiple countries to pitch a holiday in.
  • Millennials spend wisely – Millennials believe in value for money. So, travel companies are always on their toes to satisfy the needs of Generation Y. Poor quality is readily called out. It diminishes the business prospects of the travel company immediately.
  • Millennials believe in technology adoption – the travel industry in India and around the world is getting digitized. Many processes are getting automated. Simply because millennials want more automation and more convenience.

What are the distinguishing characteristics of millennial travelers?

Generation Y is another name given to millennial travellers or the millennial crowd. Almost every one of them is tech-savvy. They are experimental, creative, and informed buyers. For travel businesses in developing countries such as India and China, they make up a substantial portion of the business. Their purchasing power also increases as well. Their growing earning potential puts them in a comfortable position to explore more locations in a year and use more services and travel options.

A strong requirement of millennial travellers is personalization. They want customized travel programmers when visiting top tourist places in India and overseas. Thomas Cook, a prominent travel and tours company states that millennial travelers are the ones that opt for experiential holidays. There is also the trend of millennial travelers extending their business trips when on travel. They are ready to shell out money from their own pockets to extend their stay and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of a foreign land.

A growing trend among this travel-hungry class of people is their zest for experiences. As part of experiences, food plays a huge role. So, it is not uncommon to see Generation Y travellers going on extended food tours.

Last, but not the least is a huge keyword or buzzword that is a major draw amongst millennial travellers – adventure. Most adventure locations in the world receive a sizeable number of people who are millennials and who are ready to get a customized experience irrespective of the cost incurred. Whatever the adventure sport is – be it canoeing, rappelling, skiing, underwater adventures, snorkelling, paragliding, parasailing, speedboat, cruising – there are always takers for these activities. And most of the takers are millennial travellers who are ready to pay for an experience and don’t really mind the cost.
