Dark Tourism in India by Priyanka Shetty

People travelling to places and staying outside their usual environment for leisure, business, or other purposes for more than one year is part of tourism. Service sector tourism has become one of the important sources of money. India has seen a rapid increase in tourism in the past decade in addition to specialty forms of tourism that have also emerged over time. niche tourism has grown in this sector.

According to Malcolm Foley and John Lennon, dark tourism involves travelling to places historically associated with death and suffering (1996). Individuals are drawn to dark locations for their historical value, rather than their association with death and suffering. Because of this, this type of tourism is also known as “Grief tourism” or “black tourism”. Some of the motives for visiting this place include remembering the tragedy and its consequences, interest in human psychology, desire to pay respect to the deceased, etc.

People nowadays travel between locations both domestically and internationally for a variety of reasons, including business trips, leisure, pilgrimage, meeting friends and relatives, fairs and festivals, relaxation, adventure, sports, and economy diversification. Tourism is a very dynamic industry that has to deal with ever-changing consumer demands and a constant emphasis on consumer satisfaction. Tourism creates employment, leads to infrastructure development, foreign exchange, economic diversification, cultural awareness, preservation of natural resources, and more.

A person’s choice of vacation has changed over the years, and now tourists are interested in particular interest tourism. Special interest tourism centres on viewing and experiencing something unique with a goal in addition to viewing or enjoying scenic beauty. It provides a variety of tourism activities that are tailored and specifically targets those with particular interests. It provides a wide range of experiences including rewarding, adventurous, and educational.

India’s tourism industry is an important agent in both economic and social change. The country’s rich cultural heritage and travel and tourism have always been a part of the country. In recent years the country has enjoyed a considerable surge in tourism. We have Himalayan mountains, beaches, valleys, deserts, wildlife, and forests, all of which have healing powers and provide a unique experience. According to the forecast, the sector of tourism is expected to increase by 6.9% to 32.05 lakh crore (US$460 billion) by 2028 (9.9% of GDP). In addition, jobs have been created in many sectors as a result of the increase in foreign direct investments in tourism. The “Atithi Devo Bhava” programme, introduced by the Government of India, teaches all the parties the value of tourists and tourist places. It teaches people to appreciate the importance of preserving nature, culture, heritage, and hospitality in particular.

Since 2002, the Indian government has launched the Incredible India campaign to promote tourism. The campaign showcased different facets of the country, including art, music, yoga, spirituality, India’s unique culture, and so on. Because India is so diverse, there are numerous options for travellers who want to visit India. There are several varieties of tourism in India, including cultural tourism, historic tourism, spiritual tourism, religious tourism, health tourism, yoga tourism, eco-tourism, and many other types of tourism. Sports tourism, village tourism, adventure tourism, and recreational tourism are just a few examples.

According to Foley and Lennon (1996), dark tourism is a form of tourism that involves travelling to locations associated with death and disaster. People are increasingly interested in dark tourism in recent years because of their strong curiosity about death (Lennon & Foley, 2000). Dark tourism is still a fresh concept for the tourism industry. The idea behind heritage tourism is to combine history, heritage, tourism, and suffering (Niemela, 2010). Places that have endured social and political upheavals or conflicts or remember tragic historical significance and emotional resonance are considered to be part of this category. These destinations were formerly used as a location for a very violent act in a very dark period in history. Because of this, they are known as black tourism or grief tourism. Stone opened the Institute for Dark Tourism Research (iDTR) as the world’s first academic centre in this field.

Dark Tourism may also be experienced in a variety of ways, such as:

#1. Grave tourism
#2. Prison and Persecution site tourism
#3. Natural disaster area tourism
#4. Modern Political sites
#5. Industrial Disasters

In roman era, audiences took keen interest in gladiator fights and enjoyed them with full enthusiasm, which is evident from the fact that from medieval times to the nineteenth century, there used to be large gatherings whenever there was any public execution. It can also be seen from the facts that from medieval times to the nineteenth century, audiences took keen interest in public executions and enjoyed them with full enthusiasm. As Rome’s Colosseum was the first location of dark tourism for those interested in tourism linked to death and destruction, the first research on the topic was published in an international journal of science of cultural and heritage in 1996.

According to researchers, dark tourism involves psychological exploration of tourists, but pilgrimage has a sacred function. Dark tourism is commonly connected with heinous historical events and might be focused on simply obtaining social and economic status. In the present day, dark tourism has developed into one of the most desirable sorts of tourism. Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Poland, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, Ground Zero, New York City, the United States, Cu Chi Tunnels, Saigon, Vietnam, are a few of the world’s most renowned dark tourism locations.

The seven suppliers or seven foundations of dark tourism are as follows:

#1. Dark Fun Factories:
These are locations that provide thrills by focusing on the superficial deaths caused by business and financial principles. They have good tourist infrastructure. For example, the Dracula Park in Romania.

#2. Dark Exhibitions:
This idea provides tourists with death-related experiences but only for educational and learning purposes. There are locations, sites, and exhibits that display death and suffering.

#3. Dark Dungeons:
These are the places and sites that are defined as criminal history and mistreatment. These are again places that purely educate tourists on history of destination. For example, prisons

#4. Dark Shrines:
They are not so popular websites. They are located nearby to the sites of death and misery. They look very brutal and are certainly not at all eye-catching. They are visited only to pay respect to the deceased.

#5. Dark Resting Places:
To pay respect to the loved ones, these are usually visited cemeteries and graveyards.

#6. Dark Conflict Sites:
These are destinations that are linked to significant events in history. Battles were fought at these locations, and now they draw significant numbers of visitors. An example is the Battle of Jhansi.

#7. Dark places of mass killing:
There are sites where there is suffering, death, and atrocities, and these are grouped into the darkest and lightest sites.

One can glean from this information that fears, insecurity, love, humanity, sympathy, and superiority are some of the psychological motivations that lead tourists to visit dark locations and sights.

The problems that Dark Tourism in India is facing
There are several locations throughout India that are considered to be negatively viewed by society. These locations are known as dark tourism destinations, and they represent significant areas of death and destruction in India’s history. The motive of tourists is to explore the psychological effects of visiting these sites, which creates a difficulty for people to accept. There is a lack of understanding and knowledge about dark tourism, and also a difficulty with regard to cultural values, ethics, and values and morals of the people of India, which has prevented it from being marketed well. Dark tourism locations are not well promoted, and there are no proper services for tourists at these places. Because they are not well advertised, they are not accessible to tourists. The Indian department of tourism has not established policies for dark tourism sites.

Conclusion
The aim of the article is to discover the foundations of dark tourism. People are becoming increasingly fascinated by dark tourism, which is aiding to boost tourism and contribute to socio-economic development. This kind of tourism is often associated with other aspects. Dark tourism encompasses a variety of sites with little or no connection, which makes them popular. The report says that there is still a problem of values and ethics when it comes to promoting dark tourism in India. Graduate students and undergraduates of tourism studies can also now include dark tourism in their curriculum. It is also drawing the attention of PhD researchers. Dark tourism has become a frequent topic for magazine articles and newspaper write-ups due to its visibility. Places that are not particularly attractive to tourists because of various reasons may boost their economy through tourism by promoting dark destinations as a tourist destination. Very little literature on dark tourism is available, so a small study was done on Indian tourism.

Our First Trip to Goa, A Magical State in India By Kshitij Singh

It seemed like forever since Goa had been on our bucket list of places to visit. After months of ‘liking’ photos and reels, our friends would post from Goa, we no longer could just scroll through the beautiful beaches on our screen. We booked our tickets, and hotel, and started our journey to what would become our favorite holiday destination.

On our way from Panji to Candolim where we had booked a place to stay for our holiday, I could not help but think of all the things to do in Goa – long walks on the beach, loafing in the shacks sipping beer, surfing, and hitting the casinos! My girlfriend on the other hand, was enchanted by the Goan landscape as her eyes followed the endless trail of palm trees and the never-ending coastline while our cab drove through the magical state of India.

With just an hour left for the sunset, we decided to watch it right from the pool in our hotel which overlooked the Candolim beach and the Arabian sea. On our first night in Goa we hit the famous Club LPK – Love Passion Karma. Bollywood music, drinks, and a great dance floor, this was one of our best nightlife experiences ever.

The next morning, we rented a scooter to ride along the scenic routes of Goa that we just couldn’t get enough of. We had long waited to visit the Chapora or the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ fort. On the way to the fort lie many beautiful beaches with shacks for the complete Goan ‘susegad’ experience.

The highlight of our day was the time spent at the Calangute beach which is the biggest beach in Goa. Unlike Candolim, it was well crowded with backpackers and tourists flocking to the area. My girlfriend, who’s scared of water, stood by the shore while I enjoyed the water sports, pitying her for missing out on some of the best adventures of life.

When it was nighttime again, we decided to dump the clubs for something more exclusive and grander. Having watched the roulette wheel and card dealers only in the movies, I always wanted to visit a casino. It is true that my fascination with casinos had me playing games at online casinos for real money, the experience of gambling at a real-life casino was something different.

While there are some fantastic casinos on boats and ferries in Panjim, due to my partner’s sea sickness, we chose to visit Casino Palms instead which is a land-based casino just a 15-minute drive from Candolim. The sound of the slots, watching the roulette wheel spin while I tried my lady luck, and sitting at the blackjack table for the first time was like living in a movie.

If the vice of gambling wasn’t thrilling enough, we also went to Sinquerim beach the following day for our Dolphin safari. We were lucky to be in Goa after the peak season. Since there weren’t many ferries going around and it was less crowded, we could spot a few dolphins on our safari.

On our last day of the Goa trip, we visited the Aguada Fort and headed to Panjim to explore the heritage sites such as the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The old baroque architecture from the times of the Portuguese rule is exemplary and so immaculate, that you’d sit there for hours admiring the design.

5 Ways How Off-Season Holiday in Goa is Absolutely Worth it

Hans Christian Anderson famously said, ‘To travel is to live’. How right the writer was – if there is anything that adds charm and zest to life, it is travel. As an avid traveller, you wish to take off to different destinations whenever you can. But even though you yearn to see new places, you also go to your perennial favourite, Goa, whenever you can.

Goa: India’s most famous holiday destination
One of the most-visited destinations in India, Goa is famous for its beaches, cool hippie vibe, salubrious weather and scenic locales. From churches to beaches, and from flea markets to seaside shacks, Goa offers every prospect that pleases the senses. You can holiday in Goa by yourself or with a group. But did you know that it has an unusual charm even in the off season?

Why travel to Goa in the off season?

The months from May to October are considered off season for Goa. This is because the region experiences sweltering summers, and faces heavy rainfall in the monsoon. These factors reduce tourist numbers, but here’s why you should go in the off season:

Less people around. The off-season results in not many people venturing to Goa. So you can move around freely and explore Goa in peace. Sunbathe, zip around the countryside on empty roads and explore the lesser-seen places without interruption.

Fares are cheaper. A drop in demand results in lower airfares, so this is the best time to book your flights and make resort/hotel bookings. Goa Resorts
offer great deals on accommodation and sightseeing, while you can get excellent round trip flight fares at this time.

The nightlife is more relaxed. Though most party hotspots on the Baga-Calangute stretch are shut in the off season, there are other pubs that are open during this time and which have lower tariffs on drinks and food as well. You can hire a car and move about exploring the nightlife at your pace.
The casinos offer a great experience. Goa’s casinos are not for the faint-hearted, but they are family-friendly during the off season in India. You can pick from different entry packages (these comprise food and drink plus the entry cost) and just soak in the atmosphere while watching people make their fortunes.

The best places to visit in Goa
The beaches. Goa is primarily known for its beaches that dot both the North and South of the State. The beaches invite you to take a dip in the water, or sit on the sand and soak in the sunshine, or have a relaxing drink by a seaside shack. From Palolem to Calangute, and from Colva to Dabolem, there are several beaches to visit and relax at.

Religious places. Though most people believe that Goa follows a primarily Christian faith, you will be stunned to discover the most beautiful places of worship belonging to other faiths here. Where there’s a Basilica de Bom Jesus, there is also a Mangeshi Temple.

Flea Markets. The erstwhile hippie destination still retains its love for laidback shopping and eating spots. Check out weekend markets and flea markets at Anjuna and Calangute beach, among others.

Sky Above Sand Below and Peace Within

It was a hot summer in March. As newlyweds, we decided to choose goa as our honeymoon destination. It was my first time in goa and my first road trip with my husband. My heart was fluttering with joy as we entered goa. I could see the luscious blue waves from our car window calling out to me in the broad daylight. Before I could enjoy the view further the butterflies in my stomach craved the yummy delicacies of Goa.

We checked in to a hotel quickly ordered lunch. Gosh! The yummy food made me gorge on it as I had never eaten before. With my stomach being full we decided to take a rest.
The clock struck 5:00 pm it was time to take a stroll on the beach. We quickly got dressed for the beach and grabbed a bottle of water (as it was too hot!). We decided to reach our destination by walking rather than riding as it would help us burn some calories, which was a kind suggestion given to me by my fitness freak husband.

As we were nearing the beach, I could feel the breeze of the sea gushing on to my face welcoming me. I stepped my foot onto the grainy sand of the beach and felt the warmth on my toes. I turned around and saw that the beach was crowded, the shacks were playing music which made everybody who entered the beach to dance.

Somehow my husband found a spot where there was less crowd and we settled ourselves to enjoy the view of the beach with the setting sun. I was disturbed, looking at the expression on my face my husband said “Forget the crowd. Enjoy the liveliness of this place. Trust me you will fall in love with this place and would never feel like going back”.

With a grumpy face, I started staring at the sunset, my eyes slowly started drifting towards the people who were enjoying the moment not bothered about the crowd. To my amazement, I found people of different age groups. There was a group a middle-aged men and women who were performing laughing exercises and behind them were a group of mutts who were puzzled at the strange behavior of the humans. That scenario brought a smile to my face. I nudged my husband to take a walk. As we were enjoying the coolness of the water washing our legs, I saw a group of young boys enjoying the swim throwing water on each other’s faces.

I could hear sounds of excitement yahoo…. There! High up in the sky someone was paragliding. I got goosebumps seeing them flying. I was imagining myself flying trying to hold the sun.
As we walked further there was a family, where the mother was helping her 2-year-old son to build a castle and the father was holding the toddler in water so that he could learn how to swim.
The owners of the boat were coaxing us to go for a ride on their boat but we refused them gently as we decided to enjoy the liveliness of this place. Amidst the hustle and bustle were a group of youngsters who were energetic and bubbly, never getting tired of taking selfies using different filters and poses till got the desired one suitable for their Instagram or other social media posts. I looked at my husband and said “the present gen”. My husband smiled took out his phone and clicked a pic and said “who would not like to click pics”. We giggled and as we walked, I realized that keeping aside our desires and aversions we should enjoy and live every moment of our life… Everything in life does not happen according to our wish because you live only once…
